The Shoe Label: Toms Shoes

It is wonderful to know that many companies share their blessings to the needy.  I know many companies who are dead serious with their social responsibility and I am glad that the shoe industry is participating in acts of kindness like giving free footwear.  One particular footwear company that does this is Toms.

Toms was founded by Blake Mycoskie, an American traveler.  In 2006, he traveled to Argentina and made friends to the local children.  Because of his desire to help, Toms Shoes was founded.  Why shoes?  He noticed that most children in the community had no footwear which makes them susceptible to various diseases like podoconiosis.  It is a fungus that gets into the feet through the pores that eventually affects the lymphatic system.  It is a debilitating and disfiguring disease.

Toms shoes are not the most fashionable shoes that a fashionista will grow penchant for.  Their shoes are based on the lightweight alpargata design of Argentinian footwear.  The company promises to give a child a pair of shoes for every purchase of Toms.  To date, the company has helped more than 60,000 children under the One for One Movement and they are still counting.

What is more fashionable than helping a child by just buying shoes?  Nothing!  Imagine you are walking wearing Toms and that with your every step, you are assured that you have saved a child from having a disease in another part of the world.

Jerome Rousseau metallic leather peep toe pumps

Ready to party?  That's the first thing I thought of when I saw these metallic peep toe pumps by Jerome Rousseau.  These shoes belong to the designer's Spring/Summer collection.  Rousseau is just new in the business (he started in 2008) but the fashion industry has seen the potential of the designer and even big Hollywood names such as Charlize Theron, Katie Holmes, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and many more.  He studied footwear design at London's Corwainers College which Jimmy Choo is a known alumni.

You can get these shoes at Yoox for $884.44.

The Shoe Label: Harajuku Lovers

I didn't know that Gwen Stefani designs for the brand Harajuku Lovers and co-owns it until I read this article on E-Articles last night.  The brand is pretty much known for their quirky  and colorful designs (shoes and apparel) that captures the vibe of Harajuku--a district in Japan where teenagers gather during Sundays to showcase their sense of style and interact with other youths.  It was said that Harajuku is the collective place of mixed cultures of Japan.  It is no wonder why Gwen launched the line to cater to the colorful and fun world of the youth because Gwen is Harajuku personified in the US.  Remember her No Doubt days wherein she couldn't care less of what she wears?

The brand started in 2004 when Gwen launched her first solo album--Love, Angel, Music, Baby or L. A. M. B. which is now a popular clothing brand in the US.  Of course, for a brand that has established a name in the fashion industry in just a short period of time, they were not spared of rumors and court battles about design stealing.  In 2007, they filed a case against Forever 21 for allegedly copying their designs without their permission.

The graphic boot in photo is available at Endless for $104.96 and is also available in brown.
